Finian McGrath, a member of the Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's rights launched an action plan on crime in Leinster House.
Finian said that the criminal justice system needs to be reformed to give greater respect and protection to witnesses and victims during criminal cases so that intimidation can be minimised. This is a sad reality for many people on the Northside.
Among the recommendations are:
- More judges.
- Preliminary hearings should be held with a view of shortening trials
- Setting up a dedicated witness/victim and family liaison officer scheme Courts operating from 9am - 5pm
- A new Criminal Court Complex in Dublin should be designed in such a way as to segregate key players such as Judges, Witnesses, Jury Members, Defendants and Gardai.
- Most disadvantaged schools should be targeted with extra resources particularly counselling and family therapy sessions.
- More community Gardaí on the beat
- Develop Operation Anvil against armed gangs
- Extra Community Gardaí out on the beat preventing crime and anti-social activities.
