Minister Batt O'Keeffe

In 2009, it was estimated that the budget for building projects in schools and higher education institutions had the capacity to sustain almost 5,000 direct jobs in the construction sector. This was based on an estimate by industry analysts that 9.3 is the average number of direct jobs created annually by €1 million of investment.

The specific project to which the Deputy refers is currently at an advanced stage of architectural planning.

Representatives from the school and its design team recently attended a briefing by my Department on the requirements for completing stage 2(b) of architectural planning, following which the project was approved to progress to stage 2(b).

The proposed building project will be considered in the context of the Department's multi-annual School Building and Modernisation Programme for 2010  and subsequent years. However, in light of current competing demands on the capital budget of the Department, it is not possible to give an indicative timeframe for the delivery of the project at this time.
