Dear Taoiseach,
I have always supported the call for more Patriotism. However my patriotism does not include hammering low paid workers, the elderly, the sick, the disabled and young children. There are always other creative ways to fund these matters.
In recent months I too have taken difficult decisions in the interests of our country. Some have been unpopular but I did that in the National Interest. I have put forward ideas to resolve these issues.
These include:
- Increase the standard rate o income tax to 22% and the top rate to 45% which would raise €2 billion per annum.
- Remove impaired assets from banks balance sheets and moving them into Government owned asset management companies.
- Tax on second homes not family homes. €600 per house
- Reduce waste and bureaucracy rather than cutting essential services.
- Tax shelters and tax exiles have to be confronted
- Increase tax on profits and investments.
- Get the social partners back on board and support the positive proposals in the Social Solidarity Pact from the I.C.T.U.
- Listen to the people on the ground who have new ideas to develop our economy and jobs. There’s a pool of talent in our country that want to serve our nation in difficult times.
There is scope to borrow more, I would also ask you Taoiseach to do a National Address to our people live on T.V. in order to support economic patriotism. We now know that unemployment will average at 12 per cent in 2009 while our exports will decline by 6 per cent this year. You need to be straight with our people and then people will rally.
Society is people – without people there is no society. Taoiseach join us in the crusade to re-develop respect, trust and community spirit by insisting on people-central policies and actions. Is féidir linn.
Best Wishes Finian McGrath T.D. (Ind)
