Independent T.D. hits back

Dear Editor

I object strongly to the tone of Michael Clifford’s article on Independent T.D.’s (Sunday Tribune 13/9/09)   It is misleading and gives the impression that we do not care about “developing values, running the Country or shaping a nation”.   We are not all the same.   Deputy Joe Behan and I voted against the budget, stood by the most vulnerable in society and supported our public sector workers.   This was not mentioned in the article.   I voted on what was in the document.

In relation to “massaging their constituencies”, I have always pushed national issues too.   In fact one major issue that I am fighting for is the urgent need for a National Cystic Fibrosis Unit in St. Vincent’s Hospital.   This is not in my constituency but I will do all in my power to see that it happens.   No parish pump politic there, it is just the right thing to do.

It is also important to actively support our constituents and I make no apology for that type of work.   Independent T.D.’s are a credible alternative to political party neglect.   We are only answerable to the citizens and taxpayers.   We are not accountable to any political party or vested interests.   We can vote on legislation on a case by case basis.    Maureen O’Sullivan, Joe Behan and myself are the only T.Ds in the Dail not under a Party Whip.   This is an important distinction as it does not tie us to things we disagree with.

My priorities will always be the blind, the sick, the disabled and our citizens.   Independent voices in Irish Politics will always try to make a positive contribution to our Country.

Yours sincerely,

Finian McGrath T.D. (Ind)
