Cystic Fibrosis Update . .
Monday, 04 January 2010 10:59
"To ask the Minister for Health and Children if she will support a matter (details supplied).
Details - Will there be 34 ensuite beds for Cystic Fibrosis patients in St. Vincent's Hospital when the 100 beds are built in 2011?

Dear Deputy McGrath ,

I refer to your above Parliamentary Question.

Ambulatory care for CF patients at St. Vincent's is provided in the new building opened in 2006.

Eight new single en-suite rooms (St. Christopher's Ward) for the in-patient treatment of CF were opened at the hospital in August 2008. This brings the total level of in-patient accommodation for the treatment of respiratory patients (including people with CF) at the hospital to 63 beds.

The next stage in the development of St. Vincent's Hospital will involve the building of a new ward block to replace existing accommodation. This facility will provide single room en-suite inpatient accommodation (100 rooms) and a dedicated day unit, including 10 single day treatment rooms with en-suite sanitary facilities.

With regard to the allocation of beds I can advise that this new building will service the medical needs for people with CF and other patients who will require this type of accommodation.

Tenders for this development are currently under consideration, which should result in the signing of a contract for construction early in the new year. It is estimated that the construction, equipping and commissioning of this block will take approximately 18 months and the new facility should be operational in Autumn 2011.

I trust that this clarifies the matter.

Yours Sincerely,

Louise McMahon
Hospital Network Manager
Dublin South

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2009:
Committee and Remaining Stages.

Deputy Finian McGrath:

I strongly support amendment No. 2 because it is fair, just and balanced, but above all it deals with many of the fair play issues we have heard about in recent weeks, particularly as regards the broader issue of the public service.

Independent T.D. hits back
Sunday, 20 December 2009 16:05
Dear Editor

I object strongly to the tone of Michael Clifford’s article on Independent T.D.’s (Sunday Tribune 13/9/09)   It is misleading and gives the impression that we do not care about “developing values, running the Country or shaping a nation”.   We are not all the same.   Deputy Joe Behan and I voted against the budget, stood by the most vulnerable in society and supported our public sector workers.   This was not mentioned in the article.   I voted on what was in the document.

REPLY

The new ward block to replace existing accommodation is being developed at St Vincent's University Hospital, the national tertiary centre for the treatment of adult patients with cystic fibrosis. This facility will provide single room en-suite in-patient accommodation (100 rooms) and a dedicated day unit for people with CF, including 10 single day treatment rooms with en-suite sanitary facilities. Site clearance work has already commenced. It is intended that the building will be operational as early as possible in 2011.

The Government has introduced an extensive package of criminal justice legislation this year targeted at those engaged in serious crime, including

  • the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009 by which all organised crime offences will be tried in the Special Criminal Court unless the DPP directs otherwise

  • the Criminal Justice (Surveillance) Act 2009, which provides a statutory framework for evidence obtained by means of covert surveillance to be used in criminal trials

  • and the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 which further tightens the legislative provisions relating to the use of weapons.

All of these provisions are very new pieces of legislation aimed at tackling serious crimes but I can assure the Deputy that An Garda Síochána are already actively making use of these new legislative measures.

I am sure the Deputy will understand that given the seriousness of the offences being dealt with though this range of legislation that a full and thorough investigation of individuals and their activities must be conducted before charges can be brought against them. Therefore it is too early at this stage to provide details as sought by the Deputy.
