McGrath Confirms He Signed Martin McGuinness Presidential Nomination Form

Deputy Finian McGrath has confirmed that he signed Martin’s nomination form.  “I have always supported the Peace Process and the democratic peaceful politics on this island” said the Northside T.D.  There are times in our history when people have to take risks for peace and support inclusive democratic politics.  It may not be popular to some but that is why I became involved.  I did it for the following reasons:

  1. Martin had 19 names and who was I to prevent a Deputy First Minister and M.P from running in our Election.
  2. It will help cement the Peace Process.  Those that disagree with my position I remind them that you don’t make peace with your friends.  You make peace with your enemies.  I am up for it.  Are you?  That’s the change for all of us.
  3. When people change and make a huge contribution to healing on this island, I will always support that development.
  4. I was influenced recently by the Derry Presbyterian Minister, Reverend David Latimer who supported the work of Martin McGuinness.
  5. If he is good enough to share power with the D.U.P and official Unionists it is good enough for me.
  6. I want to build a new inclusive democratic republic where all voices and religions are respected.  A society built on Social Justice.
  7. Our history is steeped with former gunmen turned politicians, examples are Michael Collins, Seán Lemass and Éamon De Valera.
  8. My job is to build and develop that process.  It is not easy but it has to be done.
  9. Former Loyalists Paramilitaries are wined and dined regularly by politicians in this State and even given pride of place before the recent Queen’s visit.  Many people were not happy about that but we got on with it to help reconciliation on our island.
  10. Finally, I think we should radically change our nomination system where you have to have 20 members of the Oireachtas.  I would favour ten of 10,000 registered voters to sign a petition nomination form.  We need that reform now.

I will continue to work hard and build a more democratic inclusive Ireland.  I urge every citizen to do likewise,
