Minister for Disability Issues Finian McGrath today launched Wexford Local Development’s new Ability Programme in Enniscorthy. This will allow young people with an intellectual disability between 16 and 29 years of age who are not in employment, education or training to progress towards employment in the open labour market and deliver real world-of-work vocational training and work experiences.  Over the course of the project 100 young adults will be supported through person-centred engagement to build the skills and confidence they need to become career ready.  On a practical level WLD Ability provides 1 to 1 support and guidance, specialised training and individualised personal action planning for participants. This project engages with local employers to provide real world-of-work employment and placement opportunities for young people with disabilities who are distant from the labour market.

At the launch Minister McGrath said

This coupling of personalised support with local employer engagement is an innovative approach and I look forward to hearing about the outcomes.
