Minister McGrath is devastated for the pupils, staff and school community of Scoil Chaitriona GNS this morning.
Minister McGrath said “I visited the school this morning and was so disappointed to witness the extensive damage caused by the early morning fire. I will do my very best to support the school and community at this time. I have been in contact with the Minister of Education regarding contingency arrangements.”
A senior official in the Department of Education’s Building Unit has been appointed as a liaison to the Principal and School Management team at Scoil Chaitriona Cailini, Coolock following the fire.
An architect from the Department has been sent to the school this morning as initial assessments are carried out.
Contact is also being made with the school patron to establish if there are any other alternative accommodation options in nearby schools or in local community facilities.
Minister McGrath has been in contact with the Minister of Education Joe McHugh who has asked for regular updates on the incident and the Department’s response and support plans for the school.
Scoil Chaitriona Cailini is a senior girls Catholic NS with about 200 pupils.
The school will also be advised to make contact with their insurers to confirm the extent of policy cover and how it can be used to support the cost of repairs and temporary accommodation.
The school is closed and assessment of the damage caused will be ongoing for several hours today.
